Stormwater and drainage

Stormwater and drainage pipes are used to drain excess water and to drain soil. Together, they form a system that helps to keep soil water levels at an optimum. Pipes are available in diameters from De110mm – De400mm.

Stormwater drainage of the building

The purpose of the stormwater drainage system is to drain the rainwater coming from the roof so that it does not accumulate in puddles in the yard and does not endanger the foundation or basement. Rainwater is channelled through gutters and downpipes to rainwater collectors at ground level, from where it is channelled to stormwater pipes. The stormwater pipes are smooth on the inside and corrugated on the outside. They are not perforated.

The stormwater drainage system must be kept separate from the building drainage system, as the drains, filled with floodwater, would push the water towards the foundation walls of the building and the piping would work in the opposite direction to what is needed.

Finally, the rainwater is lead into a upstream (e.g. a ditch) or to a main manhole, situated away from the house.

Foundation drainage of the building

The purpose of the foundation drainage is to collect excess water around the foundation and to keep groundwater at a safe depth. Construction drainage pipes are used for this drainage system. They are smooth on the inside and corrugated on the outside. Drainage pipes are generally perforated 360°, but half-perforated pipes are also produced.

Drainage pipes will be placed in the trench, where they are surrounded by a draining gravel or rubble, the layer thickness at least 20 cm. The trench will be surrounded by a geotextile to isolate the draining material from the rest of the soil. Drainage inspection manholes are placed in the corners of the building to allow for later inspection and washing through the pipes.

Drainage water is lead into a upstream (e.g. a ditch) or to a main manhole situated away from the house, where a non-return valve is installed on the drainage pipe to prevent water from returning to the drain in case of high water.

Agricultural drainage

Agricultural drainage pipes, also known as flexible drainage pipes, are used to regulate soil water levels and drain wet areas. Flexible pipes are available in 50m coils and are usually covered with filter material. Geotextile, coconut filter and PP filters are used as cover materials. The choice of cover material depends on the type and properties of the soil.

Flexible drainage pipes increase soil fertility, increase yields and improve land accessibility. In addition to agricultural use, flexible drainage pipes are also used to drain residential and recreational areas, making these areas more usable and accessible.

Flexible drainage pipes are available in diameters De63mm – De160mm.
